About Current

Current was founded by Coach J as a response to what private swim coaching had quietly become.

While large group classes and school-based programmes can work for some children, they often leave others behind. At the same time, the rise of freelance instructors—many underqualified and focused more on volume than teaching—has made it difficult for parents to distinguish between genuine coaching and simple supervision.

Current exists to do things properly.

Why We Coach Privately

Private coaching allows for something group settings rarely do: attention, patience, and the ability to meet a child where they actually are.

We believe swimming should be effective, enjoyable, and confidence-building—not rushed or performative. Progress matters—but not at the expense of comfort, trust, or long-term capability.

Children learn best when they feel safe, familiar, and understood. That belief shapes how we coach, how we structure sessions, and how we work with families.

Our Teaching Philosophy

At Current, our coaching is guided by a few clear principles:

We do not rush children to demonstrate progress

Confidence and comfort come before distance, speed, or appearance

Flotation aids are not used as a default, so children develop real body awareness

Familiarity with the coach matters more than rotating instructors

Sessions are kept focused, calm, and intentional

Swimming is not a checklist—it's a skill that develops over time.

A Small Collective, By Design

Current is intentionally small.

Coach J personally coaches most students and works alongside a select group of coaches who share the same standards and philosophy. Coaches within Current are chosen not because they want a casual side hustle, but because they are serious about coaching as a profession.

All coaches are compensated above market rates, reflecting both the expectations placed on them and the quality of experience families receive.

We are not interested in rapid expansion or volume-driven teaching. Fit matters—to us and to our students.

What We Expect From Families

Private coaching works best when expectations are aligned.

We work well with families who:

Understand that children develop at different speeds

Value consistency, patience, and long-term confidence

See coaching as a partnership, not childcare

We are not a substitute for parenting, nor do we force compliance. Our role is to guide, teach, and support—not to manage behaviour unrelated to learning.

A Thoughtful Alternative

Current sits between traditional swim schools and unregulated freelance instruction.

We combine professional training, real teaching experience, and a belief that swimming should be something children enjoy—not endure.

For families who value care, clarity, and genuine progress, Current offers a quieter, more considered way to learn.

We teach swimming seriously, without taking the joy out of it.
